Letters, 1860-1861

The collection is the record of the four month military career of Robert De Forest Lee. The fourteen letters are in chronological order. They include letters from Lee's family in New Jersey, his uncle in Indianapolis about the lumber business, and his cousin who was also in the army, as well as letters from Lee himself. In addition are copies of his company's muster rolls, biographical information, partial transcripts of the letters, and two daguerreotype cased images of Lee.

Robert De Forest Lee was born about 1838 in Pennsylvania and raised in Morris County, New Jersey where his family lived. Sometime before March 1860 he moved to Indianapolis to work with his uncle in the lumber business. In 1861 he mustered into the Indiana Third Cavalry and his company left Indianapolis at the end of November for Kentucky. Lee's military career and life were cut short when in December of 1861 he died in a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. From the description of Lett...
